A new scam using the BBB name popped up this morning, and has been received by consumers and businesses across the U.S. and Canada…including many BBB offices!

A new scam has been taking the nation by storm under the guise of President Obama’s name. The premise is simple and that the President will pay utility bills through a new Federal program. However, it is simply not true and there is no such Federal Program. Customers of FirstEnergy Corp first reported the scam in May and other energy companies have since issued warnings to their own customers about it.

For Immediate Release – April, 2010 – A Broadview Heights woman became the unsuspecting victim of an online scammer when she purchased jewelry from what she believed was Tiffany & Company, the famous New York jeweler. Instead, she later discovered after submitting her $228 payment, that she had been duped by a Tiffany counterfeiter doing business as Tiffany & Company On Sale.

When BBB president, David Weiss, arrived at his office this morning, he was greeted with this e-mail:
“ Congratulations Cleveland Bbb (sic) ,
The Small Business Commerce Association (SBCA) is pleased to announce that Cleveland Bbb (sic) has been selected for the 2009 Best of Business Award in the Better Business Bureau category.”

A Cleveland man told BBB he received a call this morning from someone claiming he was from the Cleveland BBB. The caller said the consumer had won $1.8 million and a new Mercedes. The call came from (876) 382-3005.

Not All Charities are Equipped to Help and Some Might be Fraudulent, Warns BBB.
As immediate relief needs are assessed in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti on January 12th, many Americans are looking for ways to help by donating to a charity. BBB warns that—as occurred following the tsunami in 2004 and Katrina in 2005—fraudulent charities will likely emerge to try and scam donations from well-meaning Americans.
